Episode 153, in which we look at motorcycle techs with Steven Packard

Being disorganized is rarely a benefit. It can cause serious delays, as is the case with this episode. I recorded my conversation with Steven Packard in October 2023, and recently “found” it on my computer when—as I’m sure you can guess—looking for something else!

But here we are, and Steven has a lot to say about how and why people become motorcycle technicians. We also get into a fascinating riff on the difference between a mechanic and a technician and I came away from our chat with a much deeper appreciation of the people I pay to work on my motorcycles (and cars, too, if we’re being honest). Steven gives his email address in the discussion for anybody interested in pursuing a career as a technician, and you can visit RPC Partners on the web as well.

In the news, we look at Harley-Davidson’s announcement they’re moving production of more bikes to Thailand—and yes, this time the move includes bikes destined to be sold in the United States. (Read this 2017 piece on Harley’s Thai factory for reference.) Harley also announced training their one millionth rider through their US-wide Riding Academy. Finally, Royal Enfield says they’ll street their first production electric motorcycle some time in FY 2025, whenever that might be.
