What is a restoration? with Lee Deyoung (167)

If you’ve ever thought about buying and riding a vintage motorcycle, this is the year you’ll want to listen to Chasing the Horizon! We’re engaging experts skilled in restorations, custom builds and motorcycle maintenance to give you the low-down on exactly what owning a vintage bike requires. There's a lot of good info in there about keeping up your modern bike as well, so don't skip these episodes just because we're talking about older bikes.

The first episode in the series features Lee Deyoung. Lee's been around a long time and has done a lot of restorations - like ... a lot a lot. He's so committed to maintaining the legacy of BMW's yesteryears he was awarded the Professor Doctor Gerhard Knöchlein BMW Classic Award. That's a mouthful to be sure, but what it means is that BMW the company in 2018 chose to recognize Lee as somebody who has made "a special contribution towards conserving and promoting the history of the BMW brand." It really is a major award, but to my knowledge comes with a plaque rather than a lamp. Lee's not on social media, but you can find him tooling around Illinois on his vintage bikes any time the weather is halfway decent.

When I asked Lee to talk to me about the different kinds of restorations a rider could undertake, I did so out of genuine curiosity as to what I might be getting myself into with my vintage bikes, a 1976 R 90/6 and a 1966 R 60/2. To quote the late, great Marty DiBergi, "I got that ... and a whole lot more!"
